I am above all a painter of light from life. My ideas are expressed through paintings and drawings made in the moments or hours that I am able to spend in a particular place. I am interested in understanding spaces, how colour and temperature articulate space, whether it be an interior or the landscape and often my paintings are about a dialogue between the two. I also love Community, the peopled landscape and how a narrative can emerge from that.
Sometimes I develop work in the studio from my drawings and studies; as Bonnard said “…the point of departure for a painting being an idea .... I need to remove myself from the incidences of the direct view…”
In the studio, my sketchbooks and studies become signposts which transport me back to the sensations felt during that first encounter with place, from that anchorage I can begin to clarify and carve out what I wish to convey. My destination being something deeply known or intuited by me, an idea conveyed in paint.
